Hamptons Queenslander | House of the week tour

This weeks home tour is a fresh and bright Hampton's Queenslander.  Featuring my fav colour combination of classic black and white its a great example of a beautiful family home.

Who lives here

Elisha Manning - Marketing, Luke Manning - Director of Business Development, Lachlan - 7, Bailey 5, Isla 2 and one more on the way (due July). No pets as yet.

Style of home and location

Hamptons Queenslander - a combination of the style of a Hamptons beach house with the relaxed charm of Australia's own Queenslander home. Located in Camp Hill, Brisbane.

Timeline of build

We purchased the home in October 2016 and it settled just before Christmas 2016. The next few months were spent designing, seeking council approvals, sourcing a builder, etc (as with many builds this process took longer than we had initially hoped). We kicked off building in June 2017 and the build took approx 5 months to complete - we moved in a week before Christmas.

Tell us a little about your renovation journey?

We had been hunting for the perfect home to purchase or renovate for a few months when we came across a small 2 bed, 1 bath Queenslander in our preferred suburb. We had to move fast (so fast that I didn't even get a chance to see it in person before we signed the contract). Whilst small in size it was in a great location and was on a decent sized block which ticked a lot of boxes for us.

Our brief to our designer, Chris Brumby of Big House Little House was to achieve an open-plan classic take on the Queenslander. The home takes cues from the classic style of the Hamptons but has a strong focus on modern, tropical Queenslander living with a strong connection between indoors and outdoors. With 3 children and 1 one on the way it was important for us to design the home with our living on the lower ground to maximise the connection to our backyard. You will often find us on weekends gathered on the patio or by the pool sharing a meal or drinks with family and friends. We loved the relaxed style of living that the house provides.

What do you love about the Hampton's style and where did you find your inspiration for your beautiful home?

I love the timelessness and effortless elegance of the Hampton's style. The neutral colour palette, intricate details and charm of a weatherboard home were all characteristics that attracted us to the Hampton's style. Inspiration was sourced through images on pinterest and instagram - I have hundreds of images saved of homes and rooms that I loved that we used to draw inspiration from to create our dream home.

Did you enjoy the process of building and designing your home? Any hiccups along the way or things you would do differently?

Renovating (or building in general for that matter) is a rollercoaster of emotions and a mix of joy and stress! Being a creative person with a passion for interior design I revelled in the design phase and in building out the detail of our home. During the renovation, we were on site every single day to oversee the build and ensure the brief was carried out.

Camp Hill is appropriately named due to the steep landscape and rocky ground - this presented some challenges and additional cost through escalation and retaining and was a large component of our budget. Whilst there were challenges and minor changes that had to be made along the way we didn't encounter any major renovation issues. In saying that, it was still a busy and stressful time and we are certainly enjoying having the majority of the work behind us and to be enjoying our new home.

Favourite room in your home?

Thats a tough one as there are so many spaces to love  - If I had to pick just one room I would say our kitchen. It is everything I had envisaged and more. The crisp, white shaker cabinetry (by Corona Cabinets) provides a classic feel.

To add some strength to the overall design we choose stone marble bench tops featuring a large vein to break up the whiteness of the space. The butlers pantry comes in handy when entertaining and is used regularly on a daily basis for storing glassware, making tea & coffee and keeping appliances out of sight!

Any further plans scheduled for the future or areas still to complete?

As with any renovation and having only been in the house for a few months there are still a few projects to complete. These include a media room, kids play room, finishing off the children bedrooms and putting in a putting green down one side of the house (for my golf enthusiast husband).

Is this your forever home or do you have plans for the future?

This home is our forever home (at least for the foreseeable future). We designed it to meet the needs of our growing and evolving family. Whilst the blueprint of the house isn't likely to change, I look forward to watching the house evolve with our family over the years.

I can't resist mixing things up and taking on new projects - so the house is always changing and there is always something on the go!

A Grand Hamptons | House of the Week

This weeks home tour is a grand Hampton style home located in Sydney.  Oozing sophistication with high end finishes and beautiful family and entertaining spaces.

Who lives here

George (project manager), Mersina (lawyer), children Erin & Amanda and Bella (the kitten “aka” destroyer of new lounge!)

Style of home and location

Hampton's inspired home in the South of Sydney

Timeline of build

Labour of love….2 years in planning with a 19 month build.

Tell us a little about your build journey

My husband did the build as “owner builder”. it was a very detailed build with lots of intricacies. For example the panel throughout the house was measured, cut and placed piece by piece.

We had an amazing foreman “Rory” and a knock out designer “Zoe @ ZC Artique”.

What do you love about the Hampton's style and where did you find your inspiration for your beautiful home?

We love the character and warmth that comes from Hampton's designed homes. It’s timeless and always feels lived in. The inspiration grew on us over time. We were both modern minimalists but found that we wanted a home that wasn’t just for display. There were lots of ideas we took from but mostly from pictures in the US.

Did you enjoy the process of building and designing your home? Any hiccups along the way or things you would do differently?

The process was relatively seamless. We had hiccups along the way but dealt with them one by one…..we even managed to get away to Europe for 4 weeks in the middle of the build and before lock up.

I’m not sure I do too much differently. Maybe have gone through council to obtain more height as opposed to a complying development…..that’s about it though.

Favourite room in your home?

That’s a touch one……I’m not sure I have one. Over the 2 years we’ve been in I’ve learned to love most of the space.

Is this your forever home or any plans for the future?

Nothing is forever….Home is were my husband and children are. If we move, we’d just build another one.

A Modern Hamptons Masterpiece | House of the Week

Showcasing the popular Modern Hampton style this new build is stunning with a classic facade and amazing entertaining spaces -  such a dream home!

Who lives here

Kate Whitehouse - Media & Communications Manager; Luke Whitehouse - Electrician; our 2 furbabies - Carlos (Staffy) & Frankie (Cavoodle)

Style of home and location

Modern Hamptons-style located in Camp Hill, Queensland

Timeline of build

The planning process took about 3 months (Commencing in September 2016) - we used an architect to design the house to ensure we used the long skinny block to our advantage. We demolished the existing house in December 2016 and the new build commenced in January 2017 - it was a six month build and we moved in June 2017.

Weatherboards Scyon Linea, External Paint - Dulux Shale Grey ( half strength) and Dulux Lexicon ( half strength)

Tell us a little about your build journey

We loved this build and had the best experience. This was our second project - our first being a very testing and long renovation of a Queenslander, so in comparison, this build was a breeze. Luke also worked on the house full-time so he was able to make decisions on the fly with our builder which made the whole process much easier. It's very rewarding seeing your vision come to life and we were so happy with the end result.

What do you love about the Hampton modern style and where did you find your inspiration for your beautiful home?

I love the way the Hamptons style has been adopted in Australian homes - it's still traditional but is a little more relaxed and laid back - even leaning towards coastal with bright and airy open spaces. We chose this style as we knew it wouldn't date and would fit in well with the beautiful traditional homes in our area. We achieved the traditional weatherboard facade using Sycon Linea boards, which we love and will use again.

Our inspiration came from a few homes we had found while researching the market - including a stunning house that was developed by Hammer & Heels in Bardon that we absolutely loved and of course - I am constantly inspired by finds on Pinterest as well.

Did you enjoy the process of building and designing your home? Any hiccups along the way or things you would do differently?

I wouldn't say there were any major dramas or hiccups, but we are definitely always learning along the way - and there's little tweaks and changes that we would make here and there.

Having greater control over the build this time - with Luke working on the house every day, definitely helped. It meant we weren't coming home and finding issues or things that we wanted to change - Luke would manage them along the way and execute ideas and features/details as we went along.

It was a bit difficult at times as we were also planning our wedding at the same time so my mind was perhaps more focused on planning for that while Luke was more interested in the house! It did make things a bit more stressful than they probably needed to be.

Favourite room in your home?

I would say the kitchen - I love cooking & entertaining and it's the perfect kitchen for this. It's beautiful but still practical and I can see everything standing at the large island bench. We just love the whole kitchen/living/entertaining area. We love how open and airy it is - with the high ceilings, louvres and looking out over the pool - it's a very relaxing space.

As your home is currently for sale whats next for you both? Any further projects in the works?

Yes - unfortunately, it is time to move on - as much as we would love to live in this house forever. Our next project is in Morningside - just a couple of suburbs over. We're currently finalising the plans for another modern Hamptons new build.

Modern Hamptons | House of the Week

This gorgeous home is a mix of Modern Hamptons with a slight boho feel.  Owned by a builder and a interior design student this home was destined to be amazing!

Who lives here

Heather; an interior design student, hubby Aaron; a builder and their three children Stella, Ami and Ace.

Style of home and location

A modern Hamptons home with a slight boho feel, located in Regentville at the foot of the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia

Timeline of build

We designed the floorplan and façade ourselves so that took about 6 months whilst we were waiting for settlement of the land. Fortunately we designed it to be a complying development which meant the approval process only took 2 weeks. Construction started in September 2015 and we moved in late May 2016.

Tell us a little about your build journey

We purchased the land from a friend who had a home across two titles. Since we had to wait awhile for the development approval and the existing home to be knocked down before settlement of the land, we had plenty of time to plan. Not only did we design the floorplan and façade, all interior selections were made in this time which meant few changes during the build process. In the past 10 years we have renovated and built over 10 properties, most of which we have lived in which made designing the home a lot easier. We were able to take our previous successes and failures into account and design a home that suited our young family and lifestyle. Aaron is part owner of a home building company so we were able to rely on the companies existing systems and processes to ensure a smooth hassle free build.

What do you love about the Hamptons/contemporary style and where did you find your inspiration for your beautiful home?

We love homes that have a welcoming relaxed feel the moment you walk in the door and we felt a contemporary Hamptons style home would achieve that. We also spent many years trying to keep up with current trends only to be disappointed because we didn’t really love them. This was the first time we were really true to ourselves and picked a style we loved. We took our inspiration from the northern beaches of Sydney, where we lived and worked early in our marriage and also in our local area which is filled with quaint cottage clad homes.

Did you enjoy the process of building and designing your home? Any hiccups along the way or things you would do differently?

It was really exciting. We love every stage from designing and planning to the actual build and seeing our vision become a reality.  The 6 month planning stage was probably the toughest but most valuable. So much time spent getting every little decision right can be exhausting but ultimately leads to a shorter build time. Other than rain there were no real hiccups but it does happen from time to time and we have just learnt to roll with it, Aaron always says the perfect home has never been built.

Favourite room in your home?

Master Bedroom. We love that it is so moody. I was very hesitant to paint every wall such a dark colour but Aaron really encouraged me since the room was so large and is west facing and I don’t regret it at all. In terms of styling it was probably the least planned out room, but I love the colour scheme of the linen, eucalyptus and dusty pink against the navy wall with the warm from the pendants and bedside tables.

Is this your forever home or do you have plans for the future?

Just as we reached the finish line with this build our dream block of land became available but this build took a lot out of us both and we let it go for the sake of our family and our sanity. We had planned to live here for 3 – 5 years, but about a year after we completed the home our dream block of land became available again and it was too good an opportunity to miss this time around. We have commenced building that and it should be ready later this year.

Hamptons on Haven | House of the Week

Kristy, a designer and artist; Trent, Property Developer; their daughters, Chloe ( 5), and Willow ( 22 mths) and Ralphy the dog

Style of home and location

Hamptons/Coastal style located in Noosa Waters, Australia

Timeline of build

Tell us a little about your build journey

The build was amazing, fun, full on, thrilling, exciting and draining all rolled into one!  I actually really loved it, I think I cried the last week out of exhaustion and frustration over my pool but other then that it was brilliant!

What do you love about the Hamptons style and where did you find your inspiration for your beautiful home?

The Hamptons style is so classic, glamorous and chic all at the same time. It doesn't date and works beautifully with our Australian scenery and climate. I first discovered my love of Hamptons on Pinterest where I started savings pins for my ideal home one day.  The more I discovered the more I loved. My folder grew and I knew one day this was going to be the style of home I designed for my family.

Bed  - Early Collections, Pillows - Pillow Talk,  Paintings - Designer boys

Did you enjoy the process of building and designing your home? Any hiccups along the way or would you do anything differently?

The only hiccup I had was having a newborn and being project manager! My builder was amazing and flexible with a unique understanding of what I wanted. I loved every moment seeing my dream , my drawings and my collection of images come to life.

I think having greater control over the build helped for me, being a designer at heart having the attention to detail and buying everything that went into our house made the journey completely mine, controllable and more enjoyable. It made me responsible for mishaps so I didn't allow that to happen often!

Even Ralphy has his own little spot!

Favourite Room of your house?

I am going to say the poolroom tied with the kitchen. I love the pool room as it's my favourite to relax and wind down.  It has the most perfect view over the pool, with the high ceilings, loft and all white adds to the feeling of tranquillity.

The kitchen is perfect, just the best balance of spaciousness and workability.  It looks so sexy when its all clean and of course is the hub of the home, I can see everything from there!

Is this your forever home or do you have plans for the future?

I thinks it's the ultimate forever home but with me always designing and hubby being a property developer I know this won't be the last. In fact I think there is more coming this very year so watch this space!
