Contemporary Melbourne | House of the week

This weeks home tour is a contemporary home located in Melbourne. Originally an 1920's art deco home it's been renovated in a classic contemporary style with beautiful high ceilings, loads of natural light and stunning art

Who lives here

Rebecca (interior consultant - instagram @becshnider ),  Braham (Management Consultant) , Twins Romy & Blake 22, and Berry 12

Style of home and location

Contemporary style, Melbourne

Timeline of build

The house was renovated in two stages -  The first renovation which included adding on two bedrooms, ensures, study area and laundry was done 5 years ago and the kitchen and downstairs media room was done 2 years ago.

How would you describe your interior design style and where did you get your inspiration for your beautiful home?

I wouldn’t categorise myself with a particular style, but i love white walls then adding warmth, colour and texture through furnishings and artwork to create a cosy feel.

For inspiration I devour my magazines, instagram and my huge selected of coffee table books that I’ve collected over the years and that’s always being updated. I also get lots of inspiration when I travel

Tell us about your renovation - what did you change?

In the original renovation we added on a teenagers retreat, study area and laundry to accommodate our older twins. We added in some cabinetry throughout the house and painted the house white as it was quite dark.

More recently we added  a new kitchen and 2 skylights as the kitchen is south facing and needed a boost of natural light throughout the day.

Best tips when renovating?

• Live in the house first to get a feel for it.
• Do as much as you can to add in natural light
• Don’t be afraid to add colour and texture.
• Do your research thoroughly before starting any work as to minimise variations and costly mistakes.

Whats your favourite thing about living here?

Probably our favourite thing is being in a smaller house now while it still has everything we need.  It also quiet in our street and the kids can play out the front with the neighbours every night. Even all our dogs are out there playing together! Its also in great proximity to the city.

Your home features lot's of beautiful artwork - can you recommend some great places to source art?

NKN gallery, Irving Laffner,Edwina Corlette, Fenton and Fenton and almost every artist now is on Instagram too.

The Wren & Whippet | House of the week

This gorgeous Modern Country style home located in the picturesque Blue Mountains is a stunner. Recently featured in Country Style Magazine, this beautiful 5 bedroom home is now offered as a luxury getaway for those that love style and sophistication. It's the kind of house that you can enjoy with family and friends for the perfect country weekend escape.

Who lives here

Kasturi; owner of legal practise Wren & Co Lawyers, hubby Simon; Director of IT company Bluesource plus two fur babies; Whippets Coco & Toby, ages 5 and 6 respectively.

Style of home and location

Modern Country style located in Leura, Blue Mountains, Australia

Timeline of build

It took one and a half years to find the perfect block. The block itself was a jungle but the tree lined driveway gave it a glimmer of possibility and hope.  It took 9 months for the design process and preparation for the DA and another 9 months to get council approval. It then took 1.5 years to actually build the house which my husband did as an owner builder.

Tell us a little about your build journey

The journey had its moments of joy, anguish, trepidation and uncertainty. There were unexpected costs, delays and problems.  There were times I thought we would never be done. I used to dream of what it would be like sitting in my lounge room. The part I loved so much was towards the end when I got to style the home.  You can read more about their building journey on their blog www.Passagetoleura.com

What do you love about Modern Country style and where did you find your inspiration for your beautiful home?

I went crazy on Pinterest. I found the pictures that resonated with me and then made it my mission to source similar finishes.

Favourite room in your home?

My favourite room would have to be the main bedroom and lounge room.

Tell us a little on staying at your beautiful accommodation

The home is a perfect retreat. Luxurious without being too overwhelming. Peaceful with out being isolated.  Nourishing to the soul is the sentiment I experience but to our guests, Wren & Whippet is a place they can escape from the world with their closest family and friends.  We have a perfect cooks kitchen with a large Falcon oven, a fire pit for evening or pre or post dinner ramblings and a French fireplace for those wine and cheese moments.  For families the best part is a large TV on the other side of the home, away from the adult zones.

Hamptons on Haven | House of the Week

Kicking off our first house of the week is one handpicked by me and one of my favourites on instagram. The attention to detail on this home is second to none and every space just makes you green with envy - its just so gorgeous - enjoy!

Who lives here

Kristy, a designer and artist; Trent, Property Developer; their daughters, Chloe ( 5), and Willow ( 22 mths) and Ralphy the dog

Style of home and location

Hamptons/Coastal style located in Noosa Waters, Australia

Timeline of build

Drawings of plans started in Feb 2016. They started building in Jan 2017 - finishing the home in October 2017

Tell us a little about your build journey

The build was amazing, fun, full on, thrilling, exciting and draining all rolled into one!  I actually really loved it, I think I cried the last week out of exhaustion and frustration over my pool but other then that it was brilliant!

Chairs -  Style my home
Coffee Table -  Hamptons Collections
Lighting  - Discovery Noosa

What do you love about the Hamptons style and where did you find your inspiration for your beautiful home?

The Hamptons style is so classic, glamorous and chic all at the same time. It doesn't date and works beautifully with our Australian scenery and climate. I first discovered my love of Hamptons on Pinterest where I started savings pins for my ideal home one day.  The more I discovered the more I loved. My folder grew and I knew one day this was going to be the style of home I designed for my family.

Bed  - Early Collections, Pillows - Pillow Talk,  Paintings - Designer boys

Did you enjoy the process of building and designing your home? Any hiccups along the way or would you do anything differently?

The only hiccup I had was having a newborn and being project manager! My builder was amazing and flexible with a unique understanding of what I wanted. I loved every moment seeing my dream , my drawings and my collection of images come to life.

I think having greater control over the build helped for me, being a designer at heart having the attention to detail and buying everything that went into our house made the journey completely mine, controllable and more enjoyable. It made me responsible for mishaps so I didn't allow that to happen often!

Even Ralphy has his own little spot!

Favourite Room of your house?

I am going to say the poolroom tied with the kitchen. I love the pool room as it's my favourite to relax and wind down.  It has the most perfect view over the pool, with the high ceilings, loft and all white adds to the feeling of tranquillity.

The kitchen is perfect, just the best balance of spaciousness and workability.  It looks so sexy when its all clean and of course is the hub of the home, I can see everything from there!

Lighting ( painted gold) - Hamptons Collection
Tapware - The English Tapware Company
Kitchen stone - Neolith from @cdk_stone

Is this your forever home or do you have plans for the future?

I thinks it's the ultimate forever home but with me always designing and hubby being a property developer I know this won't be the last. In fact I think there is more coming this very year so watch this space!
